Waarom verschillen mijn MagicPost-statistieken van die van LinkedIn?

MagicPost metrics and LinkedIn's own screens show different totals for three reasons: MagicPost attaches impressions to the post instead of the day, MagicPost does not count posts published in LinkedIn groups, and a boosted post includes its paid reach in MagicPost. A fourth cause is timing: MagicPost shows the figures of its last sync, not live figures. None of these differences is a bug.

This article applies to the MagicPost metrics dashboard, included in Growth, Creator, Agency en Team and open during the free trial. The LinkedIn analytics page presents the feature.

The three structural differences

  • Impressions are attached to the post, not to the day. LinkedIn counts impressions on the day they happen. MagicPost attaches all the impressions of a post to the post itself. A period in MagicPost therefore shows the impressions of the posts published in that period, not the impressions that happened in that period.

  • Posts published in LinkedIn groups are not counted. MagicPost metrics leave group posts out.

  • A boosted post includes its boost. LinkedIn does not tell MagicPost which impressions were paid, so the figures of a boosted post in MagicPost include the results of the boost. LinkedIn shows the figures without the boost.

MagicPost explains the same three points in the app: in the Reporting tab of the Metrics page, hover Where does this data come from?.

How MagicPost syncs your posts

MagicPost syncs your LinkedIn posts automatically at night, on weekdays. There is no automatic sync at the weekend. The automatic sync covers accounts on a paid plan, on the free trial or in an organization, and only when the LinkedIn connection includes the impressions permission.

The frequency of the MagicPost automatic sync follows your activity. MagicPost syncs your account every weekday night when you created a post in MagicPost or published on LinkedIn in the last few days, or when you belong to an organization. The longer you go without posting, the less often the automatic sync runs. A figure in MagicPost can therefore be older than the one LinkedIn shows. Refresh manually to update at once.

The automatic sync of MagicPost refreshes only your most recent posts. The figures of an older post stay as they were at its last refresh. To update an older post, run a manual refresh that goes back far enough to reach it.

A post published through MagicPost is refreshed several times in the hours after publication, then once more a few days later. That is the window in which the figures of a post move the most.

A post published directly on LinkedIn, outside MagicPost, appears in MagicPost metrics at the next automatic sync, or as soon as you refresh manually.

Reposts are the exception. The nightly automatic sync of MagicPost skips reposts, with or without a comment. A repost that you published directly on LinkedIn is added to MagicPost metrics, and the figures of a repost with a comment are updated, when you run a manual refresh.

How to refresh your metrics manually

  1. Open Metrics in MagicPost.

  2. Under your name, click the line that shows your last sync, for example Synced 3 hours ago (Refresh posts if your posts were never synced). The Refresh options panel opens.

  3. Choose how far back the refresh goes: a number of posts under Latest posts, or a number of months under Period.

  4. Click Refresh.

A manual refresh in MagicPost runs in the background, and the dashboard shows its progress under your name. The deeper the option, the longer the refresh takes. The smallest option is marked Faster.

The Refresh options panel shows a line Posts up to date until followed by a date. That date is the publication date of the most recent post MagicPost has fetched. Check it before you conclude that a post is missing.

When the most recent post MagicPost has fetched is old, that line becomes a highlighted Sync posts button. It opens the same panel.

Refreshing during the free trial

During the MagicPost free trial, the Refresh options panel opens, but only the smallest option can be selected. The other options are visible and greyed out, and the panel states the limit. With a subscription, or as a member of an organization, every option of the panel is available.

Direct reposts

MagicPost counts a repost with a comment like any other post. A direct repost, without a comment, has no statistics of its own, so MagicPost keeps it out of every total and median. To list your direct reposts in the Posts tab, click the filter icon next to the search field (tooltip Filters) and turn on Show my direct reposts.

Checks before you report a bug

  1. Check the LinkedIn connection. If MagicPost shows the dialog Your LinkedIn connection has expired, your figures are frozen and your latest posts no longer appear. Click Reconnect to LinkedIn. See how to renew your LinkedIn connection.

  2. Refresh your posts. Most missing figures in MagicPost are figures that have not been synced yet.

  3. Check the period at the top right of the Metrics page. A post published before the start of the selected period is not listed.

  4. Check what the post is. A post published in a LinkedIn group is not tracked. A direct repost is hidden unless Show my direct reposts is on.

If a post is still missing from MagicPost metrics after these four checks, write to the MagicPost team in the in-app chat with the link of the post.

FAQ

Why is my impressions column empty in MagicPost?

An empty impressions column is a permission problem, not a sync problem. Your LinkedIn connection does not include access to impressions. MagicPost opens the dialog Unlock your impressions and followers: click Reconnect to LinkedIn and accept the permissions.

Why are my total impressions lower or higher in MagicPost than on LinkedIn?

The two totals do not measure the same thing. LinkedIn adds up the impressions that happened during the period, whatever the post. MagicPost adds up the impressions of the posts published during the period. A boosted post also counts its paid impressions in MagicPost.

Why did the figures of an old post stop moving in MagicPost?

The automatic sync of MagicPost refreshes only your most recent posts, so an older post keeps the figures of its last refresh. Click the last sync line under your name on the Metrics page (Synced …), and choose an option of the Refresh options panel that goes back to the date of that post.

Do I need a browser extension to sync my LinkedIn metrics?

No. MagicPost has no browser extension. MagicPost reads your metrics from LinkedIn's official API, with the authorization you give when you connect your account. See do I need a browser extension to use MagicPost?

Why can I only refresh a few posts?

You are on the free trial. During the trial, the Refresh options panel lets you select only its smallest option. The deeper options open with Growth, Creator, Agency en Team.
