How to edit an existing ICP
Editing lets you sharpen an ICP (its description, its example profiles, its keywords, its filters) without rebuilding it. If you have not built one yet, start with how to create my first ICP. What matters here is understanding which edits are free and which ones invalidate the scores you already have.
Editing an ICP never costs a credit. Only re-scoring a lead does, at 1 credit per lead, per ICP, out of the 100 credits a month a paid plan gives you (10 during the trial). And you keep 2 active ICPs at most (5 with the Leads add-on), archived ones included.
Opening the editor
Go to the ICPs tab of the Leads module and click the ICP card. The editor opens as a side panel with three sections: Definition, Filters, Keywords.
The three levers, and where each one acts
They do not act at the same moment in the pipeline, and that is the whole point.
Definition: the description plus your example profiles (up to 5). This is the only part the AI reads when it assigns a fit level. Be concrete about the role, the company type and the context.
Keywords: the terms looked for on the profile and the company. They drive the free pre-qualification step, which decides who is worth an AI analysis (see how AI scoring works). Tuned well, they stop you spending credits on people who were never in scope.
Filters: country, city, industry, company size, profile type, followers. They are evaluated alongside the keywords, in the same free pass. An exclusion, a country outside your list, the wrong follower range or profile type rejects the profile outright. Missing your industry, company size or city include-list does not: those LinkedIn fields are unreliable free text, so the profile is handed to a free borderline check instead of being cut.
The three keyword families
Essentials: one hit is enough to qualify a profile.
Secondary: two or more hits are required.
Exclusions: an immediate disqualification. An exclusion always wins over any other match.
Keywords match on the person's headline, current role, About section and their company's description. Stuck? Suggest via AI generates a first set from your description, which you can then adjust. Exclusions are never AI-generated: those are yours alone.
MagicPost warns you when your keywords contradict themselves: a term that is both required and excluded, an exclusion that would reject one of your own example profiles, or an example profile that none of your keywords would catch. Take those warnings seriously. Each one means an ICP that silently misses people.
Saving: the choice that matters
When you change the description or the example profiles, MagicPost asks:
> Regenerate the ICP?
> You have modified the description or the sample profiles. Regenerating restarts the AI's ICP analysis and takes a few seconds.
You get two buttons, and they do very different things.
Regenerate the ICP. MagicPost re-analyses the ICP. Every lead already scored against it is flagged To reassess: their score was produced by an older version of this ICP and may no longer reflect what you want. Re-scoring them costs 1 credit per lead, and only happens when you ask for it. The regeneration itself is free.
Save without reworking the ICP. Your new text is saved, but the AI's understanding stays as it was. Nothing is flagged, nothing is re-scored, no credit is spent. Useful for a typo or a small rewording that does not change your intent.
Change only the keywords or the filters and there is no dialog at all: the change applies immediately, your existing scores are untouched, and MagicPost re-runs the free pre-qualification across your leads so the badges update. No credits.
Renaming the ICP never invalidates anything.
Archiving vs deleting
Archive takes the ICP out of automatic detection but keeps everything. Leads attached to it stay in your list. You can un-archive at any time. Note that archived ICPs still count toward your limit of 3.
Delete is permanent. The leads themselves stay in your pipeline (their profiles are not deleted), but their qualification against this ICP disappears with it. Qualifications against your other ICPs are untouched.
Shared ICPs
If an ICP is shared with your organisation it carries a Shared badge. Editing it affects every member using it, and MagicPost warns you before you save. Some members can view a shared ICP without being able to change it; only an org admin can delete one for everyone.
FAQ
Does editing an ICP cost credits?
No. Only re-scoring leads costs credits, and only when you trigger it.
My leads are flagged "To reassess". What now?
They were scored against an older version of this ICP. Select them and score them again to refresh, at 1 credit each. Or leave them: the old score stays visible and usable. Understanding lead detection statuses covers every badge you can land on.
What happens to my leads if I delete an ICP?
They stay. Only their qualification against the deleted ICP goes away.
