How to generate a post from a template
|The Templates mode of the MagicPost generator writes a LinkedIn post that follows a template you pick, around a topic, a URL or a file you provide. Templates mode is part of AI post generation, included in Creator, Agency, and Team and open during the free trial. The Growth plan does not include it.
How to generate a MagicPost post from a template
In the MagicPost sidebar, click New post, then open the Generator tab.
At the top of the generator, switch from Standard to Templates. The Template and Similarity fields replace the post type and category fields.
Click the Template field, which reads "Choose a template..." while it is empty. The template picker opens.
Click a template, then click Use this template.
Set Similarity to Close or Very close.
Give the subject of the post in one of the three tabs: Topic, URL or File.
Click Generate a post.
MagicPost writes the post and opens it in the editor, like any generated post. You can then edit it, add a carousel or a visual, and schedule or publish it. See how to write and schedule a post in the editor.
Choosing a template in the picker
The MagicPost template picker has up to three tabs:
My templates: the templates you created or saved from a post.
Team: the team templates that the administrators of your organization make available to you. This tab appears when your organization has more than one member with their own login, or as soon as at least one team template is available to you.
The MagicPost template picker opens on My templates, or on Library when you have no template of your own. When a template from My templates, Team or Library is already selected in the Template field, the MagicPost template picker opens on the tab of that template instead.
In the MagicPost template picker, search by title or text, filter from the left column, and change the order with Sort by. The default order is Date added on My templates and Name on Library.
Once a template is selected, its title is shown in the Template field of the MagicPost generator. Hover the field to read the template again. The small cross on the corner of the field removes the template.
The Similarity setting
Similarity decides how closely the post generated by MagicPost follows the template. It has two values:
Close, the default. MagicPost takes the writing style, the structure, the hook and the length of the template, and writes a new text around your subject.
Very close. MagicPost reproduces the format and the structure of the template as faithfully as it can. Use it for a fixed format, such as a recurring series or a job posting.
Start with Close. Switch to Very close when the post drifts too far from the structure of the MagicPost template. Go back to Close when the post reads like a copy of the template.
The subject is required
A MagicPost template shapes a post. It does not provide the content. In Templates mode, the generator needs both a template and a subject:
Topic: type what the post is about, or paste a rough draft. See generating a post from a topic.
URL: MagicPost reads the page and uses its content as the subject. See generating a post from a URL.
File: MagicPost uses the content of the file as the subject. See generating a post from a file.
When the template or the subject is missing, MagicPost shows a warning, such as "Choose a template to start generating." or "Add a topic to start generating.", and does not start the generation.
Writing settings in Templates mode
Your MagicPost writing settings still apply on top of the template: language, tone, emojis, and formal or informal address. The template drives the structure, and these settings drive the voice. See how to use writing parameters.
One setting does not apply: in Templates mode, MagicPost ignores the post length setting. The length of the generated post follows the template.
FAQ
Can I generate a post from a template alone, without a subject?
No. MagicPost needs a topic, a URL or a file in addition to the template. Without one, the generator shows a warning and does not start.
Does a generation in Templates mode cost more than in Standard mode?
No. A generation in Templates mode counts exactly like a generation in Standard mode.
Why can I not generate a post in Templates mode?
MagicPost does not start a generation in Templates mode, and opens a window that says why, in these cases:
Your plan is Growth. AI post generation is closed on Growth: the Generate a post button carries a padlock and opens an upgrade window.
Your free trial is over. The Generate a post button carries a padlock and MagicPost offers a paid plan.
You have no generation credits left.
Your account has no paid plan, LinkedIn is not connected, and you have used your first free generations. MagicPost asks you to connect LinkedIn.
MagicPost detected that the free trial was already used on another account.
On the Agency plan, only members whose seat type includes AI post generation can generate a post from a template. AI post generation is included in Creator, Agency, and Team. See what the MagicPost plans include.
Does MagicPost show my most-used templates first?
No, not by default. The MagicPost template picker sorts My templates by Date added and Library by Name. Choose Uses under Sort by to put the templates you use most first. On Library, the list stays split into family groups, so the most-used templates come first inside each family group, not at the top of the whole library.
