What is MCP, and what can I do with it?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard that lets an AI assistant use an outside tool. MagicPost has an MCP server at https://mcp.magicpost.in/mcp. Once it is connected, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity can act on your MagicPost account when you ask in plain language: read your LinkedIn metrics, write a post in your style, schedule it, work on your leads.

The MagicPost MCP server is included in the Creator, Agency, and Team plans and during the MagicPost free trial. The Growth plan does not include the MagicPost MCP server.

This article lists what an assistant can and cannot do through the MagicPost MCP server. For the product overview, see the LinkedIn MCP feature page. For the concept, see what a LinkedIn MCP server is.

What an assistant can do through the MagicPost MCP server

The MagicPost MCP server gives the assistant a set of tools, grouped by area. The assistant picks the right tools on its own: you never name a tool. The MagicPost developer documentation describes the tools on its tools page. The reference is the MagicPost MCP server itself: a connected assistant gets the current tools from the server when it connects, so a recent tool can be available before the tools page describes it.

  • Writing. Generate a LinkedIn post and save it as a MagicPost draft, in your own writing style or in the style of another LinkedIn creator. The assistant can list the writing styles on your account, search for a creator by name or by LinkedIn URL, and add that creator as a writing style.

  • Posts. List your MagicPost drafts, scheduled posts and published posts, read one post, create a draft, and update the text of a post.

  • Media. Attach an image, a video or a PDF to a MagicPost draft, replace the media of a draft, and edit the title and the alt text of an attached media. The file comes from the conversation, or from your computer when the assistant can upload local files, as Claude Code does.

  • Scheduling and publishing. Schedule a MagicPost post at a date and time, cancel a scheduled post, or publish a post on LinkedIn right away.

  • Metrics. Get a summary of your LinkedIn metrics over a period, with totals, follower growth and your best posts. Get the metrics post by post over a date range, including posts published directly on LinkedIn once MagicPost has imported them. Check when your metrics were last updated, and start a refresh.

  • Inspiration. Search the MagicPost catalog of LinkedIn posts that performed well, by topic, creator, language, format or period.

  • Leads. List your MagicPost leads and read the detail of one lead, list your ICPs, update a lead (status, tags, note, favorite), check your Leads credits, start a lead detection on one of your posts and follow its progress.

  • Team. For an administrator of a Agency or Team organization: list the members, read the metrics of the whole team or of one member, list and read the posts of a member, create a draft for a member, attach media to it and schedule it.

What the MagicPost MCP server does not do

  • The MagicPost MCP server has no tool to delete a post, to generate a carousel, a visual or an AI image, to schedule or answer a comment, to create or edit an ICP, or to edit your knowledge base. Those actions stay in the MagicPost app.

  • A post published outside MagicPost can be read in the metrics tools, but an assistant cannot edit or reschedule it through the MagicPost MCP server.

  • Media can only be attached to a MagicPost draft that is not scheduled, not published and has no poll.

  • Through the MagicPost MCP server, a draft holds one media file. A second file is refused unless the assistant asks to replace the media, and a replacement removes every media file the draft had. The MagicPost MCP server has no tool to build a post with several images.

  • The MagicPost MCP server applies a maximum file size to each type of media (image, video, PDF) and refuses a file over that size.

  • For a member of an organization, the team tools create and schedule posts. The MagicPost MCP server has no tool to edit the text of a member's existing post, to publish a member's post right away, or to cancel a member's scheduled post.

  • MagicPost limits how many posts one LinkedIn profile can publish per 24 hours, and scheduled posts count too. Over that limit, the schedule and publish tools of the MagicPost MCP server refuse, and the answer gives the next free slot. The limit depends on the account.

  • During the MagicPost free trial, an assistant cannot add a new creator as a writing style. Generation in your own style stays available.

  • MagicPost limits how many writing styles an assistant can add to one account through the MCP server. At the limit, the MagicPost MCP server refuses to add a creator, and the answer gives the limit. The limit depends on the account.

Who can use the MagicPost MCP server

The MagicPost MCP server follows the same access rule as MagicPost API keys. The MagicPost MCP server is open on the Creator, Agency, and Team plans, during the free trial, and for members of a Agency or Team organization. The MagicPost MCP server is closed on the Growth plan. On Agency, where seats have types, it is also closed for a member with a Growth, Analytics or Engagement seat: the Creator seat, which has full access, includes it.

A subscription to a former MagicPost plan follows its own rules for API and MCP access: see The Analytics and Starter plans.

Two families of MagicPost MCP tools have one more condition. The Leads tools need access to the Leads module on your account: see how to activate the Leads module. The Team tools only work for an administrator of the organization.

What an assistant's actions consume

An action done by an assistant through the MagicPost MCP server counts exactly like the same action in the MagicPost app. A generated post uses your post generation allowance. A lead detection spends Leads credits: see understanding and buying Leads credits.

The MagicPost MCP server has two built-in checks. Before a lead detection starts, the server returns the credits you have left and asks the assistant to get your confirmation. The same answer lists the connected tools that will receive the qualified leads, and says whether MagicPost will send the recap email when the detection ends. When you schedule a post on a day or a time slot that already has a scheduled post, the server returns a warning that the assistant has to show you first.

The MagicPost MCP server limits the number of requests per minute for each connection, and post generation has its own limits per minute, per day and per week. The default limit per minute is in the errors and rate limits page of the MagicPost developer documentation. The post generation limits are in the generate_post entry of the tools page.

How to connect an assistant to MagicPost

MagicPost supports two ways to connect an assistant to its MCP server:

  • Sign-in, with no key. Claude on the web, ChatGPT and Gemini connect through a MagicPost authorization page. You add https://mcp.magicpost.in/mcp as a connector in the assistant, sign in to MagicPost, and click Authorize.

  • API key. The MagicPost app sets up Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Perplexity with a MagicPost API key that you create in Settings, API & MCP: see How to create an API key. Claude Code can also connect through a MagicPost sign-in, with no key.

Each assistant has its own MagicPost guide: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Every connection, with or without a key, appears in the API & MCP tab of your MagicPost settings, where you can revoke it.

If you prefer to write code, the MagicPost REST API gives the same actions with an API key, with one exception: attaching a media file, which only the MagicPost MCP server does. The reference in the MagicPost developer documentation covers API keys, metrics, posts and scheduling.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to code to use the MagicPost MCP server?

No. With Claude on the web, ChatGPT and Gemini, you add the address of the MagicPost MCP server and sign in. For Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Perplexity, the MagicPost API key created window gives you what to paste. After that, you ask in plain language.

Can an assistant publish on my LinkedIn account through MagicPost?

Yes. The MagicPost MCP server has a tool that publishes a post on LinkedIn right away, and a tool that schedules it. Whether the assistant asks you to confirm before it acts depends on the assistant and on how you set it up. MagicPost limits how many posts one LinkedIn profile can publish per 24 hours, from the MagicPost app or through an assistant. Treat a connection to the MagicPost MCP server as full access to your MagicPost account.

Can an agency use one connection for all its clients?

Yes. On a Agency or Team organization, a connection made from an administrator's account reaches the members of the organization through the Team tools. The assistant can compare the metrics of each client or member and create and schedule posts for them. Managing multiple LinkedIn accounts through MCP shows what this looks like.

Which MagicPost plans include the MCP server?

The MagicPost MCP server is included in the Creator, Agency, and Team plans, and it is open during the free trial. The Growth plan does not include API keys or the MCP server, and the API & MCP tab is not shown in the settings of a Growth subscriber.

Why does the assistant say that Leads is not available?

The Leads tools of the MagicPost MCP server need access to the Leads module on the connected account. In an organization, Leads needs a seat, so an administrator who has no seat gets this answer. The other MagicPost MCP tools keep working.
